Power Pop and pheromones
Fun night at the Boston House of Blues. I'm a Dad, so FWIW....it was a school night, roughly 2500 people for the general admission "Glamour Kills" tour. Mostly clean cut, suburban, teen white girls in the audience. My girls were on the low end of the age scale (13). The bill consisted of Friday Night Boys, Hey Monday, We The Kings and All Time Low (headliners). It would seem that All Time Low is a pretty big deal at the moment judging by the electricity in the hall. I'm no All Time Low devotee, and the vast majority of the material performed was new to me but the excitement in that room was unlike anything I've experienced at a rock concert before. Many thanks to my daughter for taking me there.
Most of the guys there were tagalongs with the girls. Almost no drinking, no pot smells, lots of singing along and dancing. Great clean fun. It was near the end of this tour and the show was a smoothly run, very high energy deal. Cheap tickets due to the corporate sponsorship, which I can't help but applaud.
The bands: Friday Night Boys - sucky. Hey Monday - Very hooky, nice singalongy stuff. Female lead singer/songwriter with a very strong appealing voice. Liked them very much. We The Kings - also hooky and fun with a cute long-haired boy lead singer. All Time Low - Catchy songs, a bit deeper lyrics than you might expect from a powerpop group like this. Cute lead singer boy. Annoying lighting with very few lights on the band and too many flashing lights pointed at the audience.
The sound was excellent throughout until the end of AllTimeLow's set, when the volume was turned up past the ability of the PA to sound good. This made the sound at the end just awful.
