small world Relay

the wires make it small
smaller and smaller every day
tree to tree, from you to me
twice as fast as on any freeway

there is beauty in this smallness
dogs like to smell each others butts
they sniff and take comfort
in the closeness of their own kind

but the smallness is not entirely natural for humans
we sometimes leave the pack and wander
our frontal lobes, long legs and automobiles make it easy
to leave when asses just smell like ass

and yet the wires continue to grow
connecting input devices directly and indirectly
the walls close in and assume a life of their own
comforting the dog but sometimes twisting his stomach in knots
