This year I'm going to to switch Thanksgiving for New Years. This past year has been so eventful and strange that I want to put an end to it now. So, I'll review the year that was (since last Thanksgiving) and give thanks for all my blessings at New Years.
Last Thanksgiving we had some family here for a traditional social and gastrointestinal extravaganza; very normal, warm and enjoyable. Shortly after that great long weekend I received definitive word that my occupation of 15 years was over. During the next several months three people that I loved died. But the strangest personal occurrence of all was a fast moving emotional road toward self-actualization. It was excruciating and so deeply personal that I cannot discuss it in any detail here.
So, cheers to the loved ones who have passed and year that was. Auld Lang Syne and stuff. This year we are not going to roast a turkey or peel potatoes. We aren't traveling today, and I am definitely not going to the grocery store today. We are going to stuff ourselves at a restaurant and head to the movies afterward. This is a radical change from the past, and a ritual that I hope will turn the page on the year that was. My resolution for next year is to be flexible.

"Should auld aquaintence be forgot..." Happy new year and here's to new traditions. I'm still grappling with the old ones myself...too bad flexibility isn't contagious!
