I just finished reading a "VC Andrews" book called "Secrets in the Shadows". I paren the author because it is ghostwriter using the name formerly used by a formerly alive writer. This is a series of books that has been loved by young women for many years, so I figure it might do me some good to read up a bit. Lousy writing, little to no editing but an interesting storyline. It did give me some insight into what these books are about. It is not like any book I have read before.
Basic plot outline: Small-town teenage outcast girl and heroine (Alice) spends many angst-ridden hours painting in the attic of her grandparents' house. The same attic where her insane teenaged mother hid after killing the stepfather who molested her in a previous novel in the series. Alice's guardians buy her some new clothes and makeup hoping she will come out of her shell. She comes out of shell, hooks up with BigManOnCampus, becomes prom queen. BMOC dies in car crash on prom night because he is mad at his mother and smokes pot. Townies ostracize Alice. Alice moves to another town and lives with Aunt and Uncle.
In the new town, she meets a cute but troubled OutcastBoy. Alice befriends OB, gets naked with him (but wisely does not go all the way), and tries to bring him out of his shell. OB comes out of shell, his estranged Father dies causing OB to tie a heavy pipe to his ankles and jump in a rushing river. Alice pulls OB from river, revives him and gets him to the hospital in nick of time. Finally, Alice visits her Mom in the asylum, makes peace with her and a happy ending is had.
Interesting melodrama. I want to see the appeal of this to the average young woman. Maybe I will see it when my young woman is a bit older, but I wanna be prepared for everything. Damn fatherhood scares me. Scares the shit out of me.
